Hellgate 100K

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Well, the bad news is that there are no more entries being accepted for the Hellgate 100K, the good news is that if you planning on being anywhere near Natural Bridge Station, Virginia on December 12th, you should check-out a great race! This ultra-endurance running event will begin at the Hellgate Parking Lot and will finish 62.5 miles later at Camp Bethel. The race will start at 12:01AM and features about 130 male and female athletes that will test their endurance along the 62.5 mile course. They will need to maintain an impressive pace or be pulled at one of two time-check stations (maximum time to complete this race is 18 hours). So again, if you are in the area, please come-out to cheer-on these great athletes!

Happy Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Many of you will be participating in events like the Turkey Trott, Drumstick Dash, Reindeer Run and others this week with family and friends. It is good to get out and run off some stuffing, but the best part is the food drives that are being supported by these local events. Our food banks are low on food right now, across the nation they need every can and every dollar.

This is the season to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. What better time than Thanksgiving to help others less fortunate. If you can’t get out and run, find a local drop off location and donate, every can of food helps.

Thank you, blessings to you and your families, Happy Thanksgiving

Dawn to Dusk

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Are you more of an endurance MTN Bike rider? Do you like desert rides and lots of sunshine? If you said yes to these questions, then the December 5th Dawn to Dusk endurance race at the Fountain Hills, Arizona McDowell Mountain Regional Park is your answer. Like the name says, this is a MTN Bike ride which goes from sunrise to sunset on the Pemberton Trail. This trail is perfect for an endurance race! It is very fast with a hard packed surface, lots of rolling hills, and a few low/mid level technical areas (just to make it interesting).  I’ve ridden and raced on this trail a number of times and believe me, it is a lot of fun for both the beginner and seasoned MTN rider.

The race has all of the normal endurance categories, corporate, quad, duo, and the die-hard solo group… The corporate teams also get great incentives including reserved tent placement and parking along with the sponsor’s name on the event t-shirt. Sign-up soon to be part of the excitement, or come on out to the event and cheer-on your favorite riders and teams.

I’ll see you there!

Massage and the Athlete

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

The athlete has a primary goal in mind when he is in training for a competition, and that is to perform at maximum potential. How can massage possibly enhance and increase that powerful result? Massage increases the circulation to quicken the removal of these fatigue toxins, and hastens recovery and repair of the tissue reducing the likelihood of muscle strains, cramps, overuse, and overload injuries. Being pain free with stretch massage, in particular, can give the athlete a cutting edge in restoring mobility and range of motion.

Muscles are layered upon one another and move in different directions. When functioning properly, they glide over one another easily. As the physical demands of heating up the muscles in hard training continue to build and release lactic acid and other metabolic wastes, a spasm or contraction can occur and the muscles stick together. This too can occur with forceful movement or excessive muscle loading. Athletes in training tend to place their attention on contracting a muscle, but if it remains in a shortened position for too long it will become dysfunctional. Massage application can significantly increase the elongation and natural elasticity of that tissue. It is equally important for the muscle’s proper function to maintain that muscle length.

Movement of the body occurs at the joints. Although tendons and muscles are different, they are considered as one unit and tendons are treated as an extension of the muscle, attaching it to the bone. How a certain exercise affects the body will determine the combination of techniques which can benefit the athlete in increasing their range of motion. There is a big difference between a strong muscle and a tight one. A tight muscle is actually weak and inefficient in protecting a joint because it does not respond as quickly on command and cannot move fast enough to avoid trauma and injury to that area. In its limitations, it will recruit other muscles to do the work when in fact the integrity of keeping that joint’s strength relies on the elongation and stretch ability of the surrounding muscles. Maintaining strength as opposed to tightness will increase the athlete’s performance, especially by decreasing susceptibility to injury.

Different sporting events require specific muscles to do the work. Knowing this, the therapist keeps in mind the prescribed techniques to produce the proper effect. There are many techniques available to increase circulation, prevent muscle tendon injury, recover normalization and repair of tissues, increase range of motion, and relieve muscle spasms and soreness. Massage is a vital tool for keeping athletes in top performance and can even lengthen their careers. See you at the top!

A Whole New Way to “Tri”

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Normally, when you think of a triathlon you think of swim / bike / run during comfortable temperatures, or at least that is what I thought, until today. Now my eyes are open to a whole new type of triathlon; one with skiing, snow, and chilly conditions. The TriNordique Winter Triathlon will be held on December 19th in Maple Grove, Minnesota and promises to NOT be your run-of-the-mill race.

The race starts with a 7.6k run on hard packed snow that is groomed for cross-country skiing. This portion of the race will meander through downhill and Nordic ski terrain and contains both flat and rolling hills. Once you are done with the run, you jump on your MTN Bike, yup, that’s what I said your MTN Bike, and ride for 15k. Again you will be on hard packed snow that is groomed for cross-country skiing. However, since you are on a bike, you will need to mash through the snow and navigate over more hills and a few tricky turns. Finally, if you make it this far, you will finish with a 7.5k cross-country ski that contains two short hart climbs. Wow, I’m exhausted just talking about it, but I’m sure you can make with no problems! So give it a try and let me know how you survived the race. Good luck!

You Ready To Get Dirty?

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Now this is a race that NFL Football’s John Madden would love; dirt, water, the outside elements, and MUD!   Heck, I think all of us love mud!   It gives you a chance to feel like a kid again and get a little wild and crazy!

The 2009 Muddy Buddy Ride and Run events have been going-on all year long and are about to finish-up in Temecula, California on December 6th and Phoenix, Arizona on December 13th.

These races are done as a team where one person starts the race course on a bike and the other starts running.   The course is approximately 6 miles long and is separated into 5 legs by obstacles along the way.   At the end of the 1st leg of the course, the participants must conquer a mystery obstacle before transitioning to the 2nd leg of the course (bike starts running, and runner starts biking).  The participants continue to leap-frog between biking and running until all 5 legs / transition areas are complete.

Now for the awesome part, the team members must finish the race together by crawling through the notorious mud pit before they cross the finish line.

What a way to end! So bring your “buddy” and a clean change of clothes, you’ll need it…

2009 Ford Ironman Arizona

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Well the 2009 Triathlon Championship in Hawaii has been over for a few weeks, but that doesn’t mean that there is not a lot of good triathlon racing left this year.

The 2009 Ford Ironman Arizona on November 22nd is proof of that. This is one of the premier races of the triathlon season and promises to be another exciting race to watch, or if you are lucky enough to be registered, to race in. This race starts and finishes at the Tempe Town Lake in the great city of Tempe, Arizona. The racers begin by taking a 2.4 mile “dip” in the Tempe Town Lake. Once this portion is complete, the racers jump on their two-wheel-aerodynamic-missiles and ride 112 miles through the beautiful Tempe / Phoenix streets.   Now that the “easy” part is over, the racers complete the race by putting on their running shoes and speed through the scenic Tempe streets for 26.2 miles.

Oh, did I forget to mention that; “the race is in Arizona” so there will NOT be any snow or cold weather to deal with, only bright / beautiful sunshine!!   So come on out and give these great racers a little support and soak-up a little sunshine in process. Enjoy!

Ride Without Limits

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Need another reason to keep riding your bike during the cold Fall Season? How about warm Florida sunshine and helping people with Cerebral Palsy? OK, I know that is two reasons, but I never said I was good at math…

The 2009 Ride Without Limits in Tampa Bay, Florida will be supporting United Cerebral Palsy and the people they serve. All you need to do is raise a minimum of $150 in donations and you are eligible to ride in either the 35 / 65 / 112 mile route as an individual, or as part of a team. The various rides will take you through the beautiful hills and countryside of Central Florida.

Give it a try; you’ll be glad you did!

Ford Ironman Arizona

Entering its third year, Ford Ironman Arizona has quickly become a top-rated event as some of the world’s best Ironman triathletes converge on Tempe. The transition area, swim course and expo are all very close together, and thanks to the three-loop bike and run courses, race day viewing is nothing short of spectacular.

Ford Ironman Florida

Since it comes just weeks after the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii, one would think that Ford Ironman Florida would offer a relatively easy opportunity to qualify for the next year’s “big show” in Kona. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Ford Ironman Florida is typically one of the most competitive age-group races of the year. Add to that an impressive pro field, and you have the makings for one very exciting event!
