Normally, when you think of a triathlon you think of swim / bike / run during comfortable temperatures, or at least that is what I thought, until today. Now my eyes are open to a whole new type of triathlon; one with skiing, snow, and chilly conditions. The TriNordique Winter Triathlon will be held on December 19th in Maple Grove, Minnesota and promises to NOT be your run-of-the-mill race.
The race starts with a 7.6k run on hard packed snow that is groomed for cross-country skiing. This portion of the race will meander through downhill and Nordic ski terrain and contains both flat and rolling hills. Once you are done with the run, you jump on your MTN Bike, yup, that’s what I said your MTN Bike, and ride for 15k. Again you will be on hard packed snow that is groomed for cross-country skiing. However, since you are on a bike, you will need to mash through the snow and navigate over more hills and a few tricky turns. Finally, if you make it this far, you will finish with a 7.5k cross-country ski that contains two short hart climbs. Wow, I’m exhausted just talking about it, but I’m sure you can make with no problems! So give it a try and let me know how you survived the race. Good luck!
