Are you a Marine or Triathlete?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Ok, so I never had the honor of being a member US Marine Corps, but I have heard of Parris Island. From what I have heard, Parris Island is, what’s the word I’m thinking of, “challenging”. It is where the men and women of the US Marine Corps train to become elite soldiers. So with that said, now image having a triathlon in the same location that our hero’s in the Marine Corps train. How cool is that!!! Well the Parris Island Triathlon on March 20th in Parris Island, South Carolina will give you this opportunity! You get to do a 500 meter swim in the Military Combat Training Pool (cool) and perform your 10 mile bike ride and 5K run on a course that is mostly closed to traffic. Awesome! Only one request, if you see soldiers in a platoon formation, please stop and let them go by. If you do not, you will be asked to leave the base. Enjoy!

Tri Off Road

Friday, January 29th, 2010

There are many types of triathlons out there, how about an off road triathlon? The Winter Challenge Offroad Triathlon on February 20th in Springfield, South Carolina gives the non-swimmer a chance to experience a triathlon. This triathlon combines a 7 mile trail run, a 6 mile kayak, and a 10 mile Mtn bike ride for an exciting off road experience. So give this triathlon a try. You’ll enjoy the singletracks and the beautiful lake views.

A Little Pre-Superbowl Exercise

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Ok, I know that February 7th will be an America Holiday, THE SUPERBOWL! I also know that most of us will be sitting in front of the TV watching the big game with unhealthy food and beverage in hand.

So to reduce the guilt, if you had any, you could go out and get a little exercise before the Superbowl Parties start…

If you do choose the exercise option, the members of the CSULB Triathlon Team have an interesting race for you! On the CSULB campus in Long Beach, California, the CSULB Reverse Triathlon will challenge it’s competitors with a race that starts with a 5K run, then goes to a 20K bike, and finally a 400m swim in the CSULB pool. Wow, I still have a tough enough time with the normal Swim/Bike/Run Triathlon…

So come on out to support the CSULB students and burn a few extra pre-Superbowl calories. You’ll be glad you did.

Throw the Powder Hound a Bone

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Now, I luv to Run, MTN Bike, and X-country ski, but I never thought about doing all three in one race! Good thing I only do races, not create them! The smart people of Butte, Montana have created a great race called The Powder Hound Winter Triathlon which will take place on January 31st. This race contains a 5K Run, 10K Mtn Bike, and 5K X-Country ski that will take place on beautifully groomed X-Country ski trails in the gorgeous state of Montana. Yup that’s right, these guys and gals will have you slipping and sliding in the snow while wearing your running shoes and riding your two-wheeled bikes. Sounds like a lot of fun, but not sure my Mtn Bike and I can handle the brisk temperatures. I know, I know, call me a wimp…

Good luck to all of you who give this unique race a try.

A Whole New Challenge

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Well, most of us think that competing-in and finishing an Iron Distance Triathlon is a monumental achievement (and it is!!!). However, for us “normal” or aspiring Ironman Triathletes, here is an opportunity to complete an Iron Distance Triathlon without all of the intense training. The 4th Annual Iron Distance Challenge is being put-on by the TRIGALS Multi-sport Club in Tampa Bay, Florida and promises to be a lot of fun. This event runs from January 1st to January 31st and challenges all participants to log atleast 2.4 swim miles, 112 bike miles, and 26.2 running miles. The miles are logged by the honor system and submitted weekly. The race can be done as an individual (male/female), a relay team (up to 3 members), or a spirit team (no limit on the number of members). The winners in each group will receive a monetary donation to their favorite charity. So check-out for this great event and try to support your favorite charity while getting yourself into better shape.

You Ready To Get Dirty?

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Now this is a race that NFL Football’s John Madden would love; dirt, water, the outside elements, and MUD! Heck, I think all of us love mud! It gives you a chance to feel like a kid again and get a little wild and crazy! The 2009 Muddy Buddy Ride and Run events have been going-on all year long and are about to finish-up in Temecula, California on December 6th and Phoenix, Arizona on December 13th.  These races are done as a team where one person starts the race course on a bike and the other starts running. The course is approximately 6 miles long and is separated into 5 legs by obstacles along the way. At the end of the 1st leg of the course, the participants must conquer a mystery obstacle before transitioning to the 2nd leg of the course (bike starts running, and runner starts biking).   The participants continue to leap-frog between biking and running until all 5 legs / transition areas are complete. Now for the awesome part, the team members must finish the race together by crawling through the notorious mud pit before they cross the finish line.   What a way to end!   So bring your “buddy” and a clean change of clothes, you’ll need it…

A Whole New Way to “Tri”

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Normally, when you think of a triathlon you think of swim / bike / run during comfortable temperatures, or at least that is what I thought, until today. Now my eyes are open to a whole new type of triathlon; one with skiing, snow, and chilly conditions. The TriNordique Winter Triathlon will be held on December 19th in Maple Grove, Minnesota and promises to NOT be your run-of-the-mill race.

The race starts with a 7.6k run on hard packed snow that is groomed for cross-country skiing. This portion of the race will meander through downhill and Nordic ski terrain and contains both flat and rolling hills. Once you are done with the run, you jump on your MTN Bike, yup, that’s what I said your MTN Bike, and ride for 15k. Again you will be on hard packed snow that is groomed for cross-country skiing. However, since you are on a bike, you will need to mash through the snow and navigate over more hills and a few tricky turns. Finally, if you make it this far, you will finish with a 7.5k cross-country ski that contains two short hart climbs. Wow, I’m exhausted just talking about it, but I’m sure you can make with no problems! So give it a try and let me know how you survived the race. Good luck!

2009 Ford Ironman Arizona

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Well the 2009 Triathlon Championship in Hawaii has been over for a few weeks, but that doesn’t mean that there is not a lot of good triathlon racing left this year.

The 2009 Ford Ironman Arizona on November 22nd is proof of that. This is one of the premier races of the triathlon season and promises to be another exciting race to watch, or if you are lucky enough to be registered, to race in. This race starts and finishes at the Tempe Town Lake in the great city of Tempe, Arizona. The racers begin by taking a 2.4 mile “dip” in the Tempe Town Lake. Once this portion is complete, the racers jump on their two-wheel-aerodynamic-missiles and ride 112 miles through the beautiful Tempe / Phoenix streets.   Now that the “easy” part is over, the racers complete the race by putting on their running shoes and speed through the scenic Tempe streets for 26.2 miles.

Oh, did I forget to mention that; “the race is in Arizona” so there will NOT be any snow or cold weather to deal with, only bright / beautiful sunshine!!   So come on out and give these great racers a little support and soak-up a little sunshine in process. Enjoy!

A little Cozumel with your Ironman

Monday, October 19th, 2009

As the days pass by, and winter comes knocking at the door, looking for places to get away that are warm, sunny and beautiful become a priority. Cozumel has just what the Dr ordered. An Island Caribbean Paradise. And on November 29th, the Ford Ironman Cozumel, with 50 slots in the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2010 gets the island hopping. An open water swim with mass start, the cycling takes you around half the island and the run is along the coast. This will be a spectacular Ironman.

If an Ironman is not enough fun for you; while there plan on doing some scuba diving, swim with the dolphins, visit Maya ruins, or just relax on the beach

This years event is already sold out – be prepared to register early, registration opens up on November 30 for the 2010 event. This will give you a chance to train and be in top form for next year.
