So this sounds really cool! A race with no commitment on distance (guys, no commitment necessary, I think this is for us…). So what am I talking about? I’m talking about the Dirty Dozen and Half Dozen Endurance in Pinole, California which will take place on July 10th. This race offers a really interesting format, a run based on time not distance. This means that all you have to do is commit to running 6 or 12 hours (oh-oh guys, there’s that commitment word again) and run for as long and as far as you can. The race offers a beautiful 3.1 mile loop that will bring you through the start/finish area each time where you can stock-up on water, fuel, or talk-time with your friends. Sounds like a good time to me!

Dirty Dozen Endurance Run in Pinole, CA - July 10
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010Looking for Santa Claus? Jingle Bell Run/Walk in North Pole, Alaska July 10th
Thursday, June 24th, 2010Hey, don’t the people of Alaska have calendars? It’s still early summer, isn’t it??? Well, now I’m totally confused… Here I am looking on the web trying to find my next cool event and I think I found it… Heck, it can’t get much “cooler” than Alaska, can it? To make it more confusing, they almost have me believing that it is Christmas time already. Whoa, I think I need to lie down for a second…
So what has me so confused, well I’ll tell you; it is the Jingle Bell Run/Walk in North Pole, Alaska. This event will be happening on July 10th and is starting at the Santa Claus House. Are you serious? You mean old St. Nick is really gonna let a bunch of people start running/walking from his house when he is busy preparing for next Christmas??? These people must really have some “connections” with the “Big Guy” in North Pole! So what’s next, are Santa Claus and his elves also going to run the race? Well, they just might… To make this event even more interesting, they are encouraging all participants to wear holiday costumes and/or bells on themselves. So you had better watch out and be a good boy/girl during the race, Santa and his elves may join the race and watch you while you are racing…
Oh, I was so excited with all the Christmas, North Pole, and Santa Claus stuff; I almost forgot the most important part of this event. This event will support the Arthritis Foundation (what a great foundation) and offers an incentive to raise money for the foundation. The person who raises the most money (more that $3000) will receive two round trip tickets on Alaska Airlines. So come on up to the North Pole, support a good cause, and who knows, you may meet Santa Claus and get on his “nice” list. Have fun!
I like Beer Bellies - The Beer Belly Two in Suamico, WI on June 27th
Wednesday, June 16th, 2010Now this is just a cool name for a race, the Beer Belly Two! Just hearing the name makes me feel less self-conscious of the belly and “love handles” that suddenly appeared when I reach 40+ years old. It makes me want to go check-out this even and see all of the fit and not so fit participants! I may just do that…
The Beer Belly Two is a family oriented run/walk that takes place on June 27th in Suamico, Wisconsin. The purpose of this run/walk is to raise money for local family-oriented human service organizations, including Children with Cancer, Golden House, Ecumenical Partnership for Housing and Paul’s Pantry. It offers a 2-mile competitive run or a 2-mile fun walk and promises to be a great time. So please, come support some great organizations, get a little exercise, and yes, be proud to show off your own beer belly…
DetermiNation to find a cure
Monday, May 31st, 2010I used to work at the American Cancer Society. The people there care about making a difference, not just in cancer research, but in making a difference in the way people diagnosed with cancer live their lives. Their programs support people from the time of being diagnosed, thru treatment and beyond. Their events like, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Relay for Life and others help bring awareness to the community and funds to support the fight against cancer.
Well the American Cancer Society has stepped it up in the arena of athletic events. They have a new program DetermiNation. Joining forces with the Rock n’ Roll marathon series and many other events around the country, ACS and DetermiNation are looking to educate and raise money for the Fight Against Cancer!
Find out how you can get involved and find the determination to endure, and the DetermiNation to find a cure.
Miles for smiles in Colorado, June 5th
Monday, May 17th, 2010Want to get in a little run and feel good about yourself while doing it? Looking to support a really fantastic cause? If you said “yes” to one or both of these questions, then you need to check-out the Miles-For-Smiles run. Worchester, Washington will be putting-on a Miles-For-Smiles run on June 5th that will support the Two Angels Foundation. So you are probably asking what is the Two Angels Foundation? This foundation was organized in memory of Allyson and Rachel Mohatt, two little girls who were diagnosed with, and passed-away from Nemaline Myopathy which is a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. In memory of these two brave girls, the foundation helps to obtain the funding of adaptive equipment to be used at home and school for other special needs kids. Sounds like a great reason for me to toss on my sneakers and head out for a run…
What’s a Skinny Raven? Anchorage AK, June 4th
Friday, May 14th, 2010I’ve grown-up and seen plenty of well-fed Ravens flying around in my time, but never seen a “Skinny Raven”. So I asked myself, what the heck is a “Skinny Raven? That’s when I learned that Skinny Raven is actually a running apparel shop located in Anchorage, Alaska that puts-on a cool running race and has some sweet footware. The Skinny Raven Twilight 12K Run in Anchorage, Alaska is the race and it will take place at 7PM on June 4th. This sounds really cool because you can start the race and there will still be plenty of light at 7PM (not your typical evening run!!!). Another great thing is that you can actually do this run in shorts and a t-shirt because the temperatures are reasonable warm in Alaska during this time of year. Sounds like a good time to me, beautiful scenery in Anchorage, an awesome opportunity to race in an exotic area of the world and delicious pizza and beer from Bear Tooth Pizza when finished. Sign me up!

BBQ For A Good Cause - a 5k run in Northborough, MA
Monday, March 15th, 2010MMMM…. Nothing like the intoxicating smell of a BBQ to make you feel good. Now I know what you’re thinking… I am reading an athletic blog and this guy is talking about BBQ, what gives? Well 1st of all, even though I love to run and bike, it doesn’t mean that I do not have a soft spot in my stomach for a good BBQ food. Secondly, a BBQ for a good cause is even better!!! This is where the Run, Grill and Chill for Autism on April 11th in Northborough, MA comes in. These people really know the way to my heart… They give you a 5K run in the morning, an all-day BBQ after that, and do it all for a great cause; to raise money and awareness for autism (because April is Autism Awareness Month). Come check-out this great running event, eat some great food, and show your support for autism!
Which Princess Are You?
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010So everybody knows that Walt Disney World is “where dreams come true”, but did you also know that it is a great place to do a half-marathon? Don’t believe me, well it is true… On March 7th, the Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida will be hosting the Disney’s Princess Half Marathon. This run will take the racers through the heart of Disney (from Epcot Center to the Magic Kingdom, and everywhere in between). That sounds so cool! Only one problem… No guys allowed. This race is only for the Princess (wife, sister, daughter, mother, etc…) in your life. Bummer! Guess I’ll just have to enjoy the park while my wife does the run.
Oh, and for all of you looking for a good cause, this race will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society which is dedicated to finding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. So come on down to support a great cause, see Mickey Mouse, and support all the Princess’ while they experience the half-marathon.
Run for Haiti
Monday, February 8th, 2010So by now, unless you have been living under a rock, you have definitely heard and seen all of the tales of horror and bravery from the earthquake in Haiti. This was a tragic loss of life and showed us how brutal Mother Nature can be. Well, we all want to help Haiti in one way or another, and now, we can do it with our running shoes. The NYRR and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation have joined to put-on the Run for Haiti. This is a 4-mile run and/or walk in New York’s Central Park that will take place on February 20th. All entry fees will go to New York City’s Haiti Relief Fund administered by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which is directing all donations to reputable organizations providing relief to Haiti.
The best part of this run is that if you are not in New York City on February 20th, you can still join in the run and help Haiti. All you need to do is sign-up, run or walk 4 miles between February 19th and 24th, and submit your results. So please, no matter where you live, sign-up for this great event and help support our friends in Haiti. You’ll be glad you did.
